What is Pay per click search engine?

Pay per click search engines (also called pay-for-performance and paid listings among other names) are engines which allow site owners to determine their sites ranking in that particular search engines results by bidding on keywords.

The underlying idea to pay per click search engines is that you find keywords related to your website and then you bid on these keywords and buy high positions on your chosen engine. Your bid amount is the amount you're willing to pay for each visitor that visits your site through the search results.

For instance, let's say you wanted to appear in the top listings for "wedding rings." You might agree to pay 40 cents per click. If no one agrees to pay more than this, then you would be in the number one spot. If someone else later decides to pay 41 cents, then you slip into the number two position.

Why use Pay Per Click Advertisement?

Pay Per Click advertisements are priced on a per-click basis. You pay a small amount each time somebody clicks on your advertisement and visits your site, instead of paying each time the advertisement is shown. Done properly, this can be an effective and cost-effective way of driving highly-targeted traffic to your site.

Which are Pay Per Click Search Engines?

Pay per click search engines are Overture, Google AdWords, Looksmart, Yahoo, Inktomi, Teoma, FAST.

Overture

Overture (formerly GoTo) invented the concept of Pay per click search engine listings. They have partnered with a large number of search engines and portals, which display Overture ads above regular search results. Current Overture partners include Yahoo, AltaVista, MSN, Lycos, and Ask Jeeves. Their reach is the widest of the Pay Per Click search engines.

Overture's listings work like an auction. You bid on keyword phrases based on how much you think the traffic is worth per visit. Other companies can bid on the same terms, and outbid you if they want. The top three bids are displayed much more prominently than the other listings.

Google Adwords Select

Google's Pay Per Click ad program is called Adwords Select. Google's ads are displayed in colored boxes in the right-hand column next to their search results.

Adwords has some nice features, as compared to Overture. First of all, the ads are displayed on Google, which is the number one search engine on the web. They are also displayed on AOL Search, which exposes your ad to a large amount of traffic that might not be using Google yet.

The only downside to Google's insistence on relevancy is that they will restrict or drop your ad altogether if it drops below a certain click-through percentage.

Findwhat

FindWhat is a pay per click search engine similar to Overture. It lacks the distribution that Overture has, however. This isn't necessarily bad. You may find that the smaller distribution base still brings in quality traffic and perhaps at less expense than with Overture.

The main reason to consider FindWhat in terms of the major search engines is that its listings appear on Excite's search results page. Because of this, if you want quick visibility at Excite, paid listings with FindWhat are the easiest way to do this.

How Does Pay Per Click Work?
